After many of you reaching out to me recently,  sharing icky body symptoms, flu stories or just letting me know of a dip in energy this month, I was inspired to put together my favourite immune boosting recipes.

We live in the Caribbean and it feels like summer most of the year round here, so most of these remedies I store in the fridge or at room temperature but you can down many of these as hot drinks as well!

As the seasons change and the rain begins to fall we always alter our diet to support the immune and lymphatic system. Our immune system is the complex group of defense responses that helps us to repel disease-causing organisms (pathogens). The lymphatic system is made up of a complex network of vessels, tissues, and organs. It helps maintain fluid balance in the body and drives immunity by supplying disease-fighting cells called lymphocytes. Booyah!

A recent study carried out by researchers from the University of Cambridge show that when seasons change, our immune systems generally either become stronger, weaker or boosted in some way. The study wasn’t just focused on the amount of sunlight/vitamin D the body gets either.

The study shows specifically that some genes are actually more active in the summer months (like me and my kayak!) and others favour the winter months (like some of you snowboarders out there!). If we are feeling low, it may be a good time to have a chat to our cells!

So, every single month is a perfect month to boost your immune system! So no matter whether it’s snowing for you up in the United States and Canada or you are experiencing the hottest wave in 80 years down in Australia, these recipes will give your cells a boost where they need it!

Here are 5 of my favourite body boosting recipes!!

1. Immune Booster Smoothie

2 cups baby spinach

1 cup fresh orange juice

1 ripe banana

1 ½ cups fresh pineapple

1 medium green apple

¼ tsp tumeric powder

½ cup water or ice (thicker)

Wash and add all ingredients to a blender. Blend on medium high until combined. I love this combination of tasty banana, chlorophyll rich greens, bromelain filled pineapple and healing properties of the amazing turmeric. While the taste is dissimilar to the Pina you enjoy lying by the pool, it could definitely be named be the Pina Colada of body boosting!

2. Liver Cleansing Juice

2 raw beets

1 medium carrot

1 cup dandelion greens

½ cup stinging nettle tea (brewed)

1 lime

6 small red apples

Filtered water to taste.

Juice all ingredients and add water to your desired consistency or leave it as is for a higher potency. This combination of liver supporters can get me out of any slump and even helps to clear my skin and remove migraine headaches.

3. Home-made Cough Syrup

¼ cup raw honey

4 tbsps fresh lemon juice

½ lemon with rind

2 tbsp raw coconut oil

½ small bulb ginger root

¼ cup camomile flowers

Add 3 cups water to a pot and add ginger, lemon (sliced), lemon juice and camomile flowers. Bring to the boil and simmer for 5-10 minutes. Let this mixture cool, then add honey and coconut oil and mix together thoroughly. Store in an airtight jar.

4. Flu Fighter Iced Tea

2-3 cups filtered water

4 small bulbs of fresh turmeric (saffron root)

4 small bulbs of fresh ginger root

3 large cinnamon sticks

1 whole lemon

Pinch of cayenne pepper

Add water to a pot on the stove. Grate turmeric and ginger into the pot and place cinnamon sticks so they are covered. Slice the lemon with the rind and add slices to the pot. Bring to the boil, then simmer on low for 10 minutes. Cool in the fridge and sip abundantly to prevent or rid flu symptoms.

5. Sore Throat Gargle

This remedy can be used as prevention as well as cure for a sore throat. If I have a new sore throat in the house, I have them drink the apple cider vinegar mixture 3-4 times per day. This mixture can also be gargled for 1 minute at a time to help balance the pH in the throat and fight bacterial infections. I love this for the early and late stages of a sore throat. I have been taking apple cider vinegar daily for 10 years and can’t remember the last time I had a sore throat.

1 tbsp Apple Cider vinegar

¼ cup warm water
