As you all know, I’m all about increasing pleasure and decreasing stress but we are all human, we ALL experience the contrast and “life stuff” does get the better of us from time to time.

Our happy chemicals like oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine help us take action toward our goals, give into our own personal needs (which for us movers and shakers is sooooo understated!) and just generally help us to feel good. Icky feelings like self-doubt, lack of motivation and procrastination may all be linked to low levels of happy chemicals, especially dopamine.

  • So how can we support our happy, vibrant selves? Well according to research, the top 2 are HUGS (1st) and FOOD (of course) Get your crazy delicious GOOD MOOD MENU here

    1. HUGS are awesome and not just because they give us warm and fuzzies. Hugs release an instant dose of oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine (the happy trifecta) and, in fact, science has shown that a hug a day really can keep the doctor away! Virginia Satir says “We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need twelve hugs a day for growth”. You’ve seen those guys with the “Free Hugs” shirts. Well, they are really onto something. REAL hugs are the bomb! I love our Skype chats, group calls sooooo much but of course in person is the ULTIMATE! So go on, hug the person next to you right now. I’ll wait …
    2. FOOD – Interestingly, Dr Alex Korb, a post doctoral researcher in neuroscience at UCLA outlines that certain foods are blessed with compounds that actually lift our spirits! For your feeling good fix on some energy enhancing, good mood foods, download my Good Mood Menu. Whilst there are some foods that do activate happiness, it’s also important to note that our brain releases dopamine in anticipation of doing something wonderful as well. Yep! Even in anticipation of a delicious meal!

    3. PEEPS – We all know the interactions we have with other people can affect the way we feel about life. Our close friendships can help us stay grounded and feel comfortable in our own skin. Studies show people both close to us and in our outer circle influence our happiness. Funny enough, even minor interactions with people we hardly know at all give us a sense that we are part of something larger than ourselves. For me, hanging out with PEOPLE always does the trick to raise my vibe. By peeps, I mean “real” people. Not those on Insta, Messenger, Watsapp, Snapchat or even Facebook! Like real fresh, in your face type of human stuff. One on one communication, real time connection, feeling love and empathy or simply joining in someone else’s excitement are all ways I am quickly able to lift the good vibes and get a healthy dose of happy chemicals. Yes, I am actually saying you should leave my webpage and go and hang out with your bestie, child or partner     or just go to the supermarket and talk to the cashier. Like just for a little while      but download your MENU first so you know what to eat later!
    4. MUSIC and MOVEMENT – Recent studies show that listening to music has the same effect as eating our favorite foods or watching our favorite T.V. show. So, when you’re feeling down, throw on some of your favorite tunes and dance it out!” Listening to music while dancing has a greater effect as you are moving your body out of the sympathetic nervous system and into the parasympathetic nervous system using your physiology. Add a light workout and some singing to the dance moves and you are now activating your vagas nerve further and pumping the lymphatic system to release toxic build up and heal your body. These are all serious feel-good body processes! Combine your music and movement for an afternoon of fun and you are well on your way to high vibin’.
    5. CONCENTRATION – Overthinking can be a total downer when it comes to our vibe. We are overthinking when we find ourselves obsessing over a solution to a problem, feeling anxious replaying past events or worrying about the future. The mind thinks. That’s what it does. Just as the eyes see and the ears hear. When we learn that we are not forced to listen to the head-mess, that we can simply alter our thought patterns and think about something far more pleasing, life becomes a little lighter! Instead of feeling perplexed, we can feel calm, reassured and in control of our thoughts and emotions. Sounds good right? Studies show just 5-15 minutes of concentration per day can help us feel lighter and skyrocket our energy. Whether you choose to meditate for that whole time or simply wash the dishes with purpose, presence and intent, you are engaging in a thought interruption activity and helping to create new positive neural pathways in the brain.

So next time you’re feeling a little low or off colour, come back to this post and go through numbers 1-5. You may not feel it until you get to 4 but at some point it will click and your momentum will start to rise
